Detailed Information

Community Hall Garden is a historic establishment located at 41 Main Street in Hahndorf, originally acquired by the Returned Soldier’s League (RSL) in 1953. The Hall, opened in October 1955, was initially shared with the Country Women’s Association (CWA). As membership declined over the years, the Hahndorf Lions Club stepped in to assist, leading to the formation of the Hahndorf Community Hall Committee Inc. in 1973/4. The Committee, comprising residents and Lions Club members, now manages the property on behalf of the Hahndorf community.

Managed under a constitution that mandates representation from within the Hahndorf community, the Community Hall Committee Inc. ensures that all income generated is reinvested back into local groups and organizations. The Committee’s primary focus is on maintaining the building and its surrounding garden area, with recent efforts including a comprehensive redevelopment project to enhance the ambiance for residents and visitors alike. The garden renovation, funded through hall tenancies, has seen the installation of new amenities and landscaping to create a welcoming space for all.

Noteworthy features of the Community Hall Garden include a unique mirror fragment display sourced from periscope mirrors of WW1 submarines, adding a touch of historical significance to the site. With ongoing improvements and collaborations with local experts like heritage architect Lothar Brasse, the Committee remains dedicated to preserving the heritage and charm of the Hahndorf Community Hall. Through a commitment to community engagement and sustainable practices, the Community Hall Garden continues to serve as a vital hub for social gatherings and cultural activities in the heart of Hahndorf.
