Young People’s Theatre Newcastle, Inc. (YPT) is the premier theatrical training institution for youth in the Hunter region, boasting a rich history spanning over 75 years. Founded on the principle of “theatre for young people by young people,” YPT has been a nurturing ground for aspiring young performers aged 8 to 18. With a focus on providing training, performance opportunities, and technical mentorship, YPT has become a cornerstone of the local arts community.
YPT’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in its welcoming approach to all members of the community. The organization is primarily run by volunteers and operates as a not-for-profit entity, relying on donations to sustain its mission of delivering high-quality drama education and theatre experiences for young people. Through its dedication to fostering talent and creativity, YPT continues to honor the vision of its founders, William and Betty Ford, who laid the groundwork for a vibrant and inclusive theatrical community in Newcastle.
Despite facing challenges such as a devastating fire in 1995 that destroyed its theatre complex, YPT persevered and rebuilt, symbolizing resilience and determination. Today, the organization offers a range of volunteer opportunities and recognizes outstanding contributions from young participants through the prestigious Arthur Boswell Award. With a focus on community connectedness and capacity building, YPT remains a beacon of artistic excellence and social inclusion, embodying the spirit of youth-driven theatre in the heart of Newcastle.
