Detailed Information

Welcome to Wollongong Shotokan Karate, a traditional Japanese karate dojo founded in September 2019. Our club follows the teachings of Shotokan Karate, one of the original four styles of karate, with a strong lineage to the founder Gichin Funakoshi. We are affiliated with Shotokan Karate International Australia and the Australian Karate Federation, ensuring high-quality training and a sense of belonging among our members.

At Wollongong Shotokan Karate, we focus on cultivating a strong community spirit while emphasizing the development of good technique and fitness. Our training sessions aim to enhance the overall well-being of our karate practitioners, known as karateka, by fostering respect, self-esteem, and confidence. Through positive relationships and constructive feedback, we strive to create a supportive environment where students feel valued and motivated to improve their karate skills.

Our practice of Shotokan karate involves restricted-contact partner work, gradually building control and precision in strikes and kicks. We adhere to the dojo kun, a set of ethical principles established by Gichin Funakoshi, which guides our members in embodying the spirit of karate-do. With a focus on discipline, respect, and self-improvement, Wollongong Shotokan Karate welcomes adults and children aged 10 and above to join us on the path of traditional Japanese karate.
