Rural Medical Education Australia, known as RuralMedEd, is a leading provider of rural medical education services in Australia. With a team of qualified clinical academic educators, RuralMedEd delivers Griffith University’s 3rd and 4th year rural medical student program, general practice exam preparation programs, and VET training. Established in 2002 with a vision to ‘train to retain’ doctors in rural Queensland, RuralMedEd has a strong partnership with Griffith University to deliver rural clinical training funded by the Commonwealth Government Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training program.
RuralMedEd’s flagship Longlook program offers one-to-two year clinical placements for medical students in rural communities, addressing medical workforce shortages through a high rural retention rate. The organization also runs programs like Considering Medicine and Aspire2Health to increase the number of rural and indigenous students entering health courses. With a focus on locally based, led, and governed initiatives, RuralMedEd ensures a dedicated rural stream for Griffith University’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, contributing to the development of a highly skilled medical workforce to meet rural community needs.
Driven by a commitment to rural health education, research, and collaboration, RuralMedEd stands out as the only health training organization in Australia graduating a diverse range of health practitioners. With a history of successfully graduating rural General Practitioners and delivering private training to AGPT candidates, RuralMedEd continues to play a vital role in advancing the rural and remote health workforce. Led by a skilled faculty and supported by a dedicated Board of Directors, RuralMedEd remains at the forefront of promoting rural healthcare and enhancing health outcomes in rural communities.
