National Police Memorial Australia was established in 2001 in Canberra to honor Australian Police Officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The Memorial serves as a tribute to their sacrifice and recognizes the unique challenges faced by police officers in their daily work. Jointly funded by the Australian Government, State and Territory Police Services, and the Police Federation of Australia, the $2.4 million Memorial was completed and dedicated on 29 September 2006, coinciding with National Police Remembrance Day.
Since its inception, National Police Memorial Australia has been dedicated to preserving the memory of fallen police officers and providing a place of reflection and remembrance for their families, colleagues, and the community. The Memorial’s establishment was the result of a long and persistent campaign led by the Police Federation of Australia, culminating in the support of key stakeholders and the eventual approval for its construction. The Memorial’s location in Kings Park, overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, symbolizes the respect and gratitude shown towards those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Through its ongoing efforts, National Police Memorial Australia continues to uphold the legacy of fallen police officers and raise awareness about the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel. The Memorial’s website and Honour Roll serve as valuable resources for commemorating the lives of those who have died in service, ensuring that their contributions are never forgotten. With a commitment to honoring the service and sacrifice of police officers across Australia, the National Police Memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the dedication and bravery exhibited by law enforcement professionals.
