The Maritime Museum of Townsville was established in 1986 by the Seafarers Association in collaboration with the Townsville Harbour Board. Initially located in the former Pier Master’s office building, the museum was created to showcase a nautical display and preserve the maritime history of the region. Over the years, the museum has grown significantly, expanding its collection and facilities to provide an enriching experience for visitors.
With a strong focus on community involvement, the Maritime Museum of Townsville has thrived through the support of volunteers, public donations, and government grants. The museum’s relocation to a larger site in 1992 allowed for the development of new exhibition spaces, galleries, and a maritime library. The addition of the HMAS Townsville patrol boat in 2007 further enhanced the museum’s offerings, attracting maritime enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
In 2015, the management of the museum was transferred to Townsville Maritime Museum Limited, a not-for-profit company dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the institution. With a commitment to preserving and celebrating the maritime heritage of Townsville, the museum continues to engage visitors through educational programs, exhibitions, and events that highlight the rich seafaring history of the region.
