Detailed Information

The Maritime Museum of Tasmania celebrates the rich maritime heritage of Australia’s island state and its deep connection to the sea. Established in 1931 by the Shiplovers’ Society of Tasmania, the museum aims to foster an interest in maritime history, preserve maritime records and relics, and promote the love of the sea and its traditions among Australians. Over the years, the museum has evolved from displaying ship models and relics to caring for over 70,000 objects, including archaeology, art, photographs, and archives.

Located in Hobart, Tasmania, the Maritime Museum Tasmania pays respect to the palawa/pakana peoples as the traditional owners and custodians of the lands and waters of lutruwita. The museum’s journey began with a small room at the Narryna Folk Museum and later expanded to the Mariner’s Church in Battery Point before finding its current home at the Carnegie Building near Constitution Dock. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the redeveloped museum in 2000, marking a significant milestone in its history.

As the Maritime Museum Tasmania approaches its 50th anniversary in 2024, it continues to thrive as a vital community resource and attraction. With a focus on preserving local maritime history and honoring the community’s enduring connection to the sea, the museum invites visitors to explore its extensive collection of historic objects, models, and hand tools. Through events, exhibits, and educational programs, the museum remains dedicated to sharing the maritime legacy of Tasmania with visitors from around the world.
