Mackay Eisteddfod Association has a rich history dating back to the post-war 1947 Eisteddfod, which marked its official beginning. From its humble origins with only four sessions and 192 competitors, the Eisteddfod has now expanded to over 750 sections, 116 sessions, and 1775 competitors. The association’s deep connection to its history is exemplified by Vice Patron and Life Member Norma Shuttlewood, who competed in the first Eisteddfod and continues to contribute her knowledge and enthusiasm to this day.
Throughout the years, Mackay Eisteddfod has evolved alongside the community, transitioning between various venues such as the Parish Hall, Olympic Theatre, Presbyterian Hall, and Theatre Royal. Despite facing challenges like rising venue hire costs, the Eisteddfod has persevered with the unwavering support of the community, sponsors, and dedicated volunteers. Today, the association offers a platform for individuals and schools to compete in dance, music, singing, and speech and drama, providing a valuable opportunity for young performers to showcase their talents and pursue careers in the arts.
With a committee comprising 26 Members and Life Members, Mackay Eisteddfod Association relies on the commitment of its volunteers to deliver a successful event each year. The association’s dedication to fostering local talent and providing a launching pad for aspiring artists underscores its mission to support and promote the arts within the community. Thanks to the generous support received, the Eisteddfod continues to thrive, offering nearly three weeks of events in October and contributing to the artistic development and recognition of talented individuals in the region.
