Established in 1964, the Geelong Little Athletics Centre (GLAC) is a volunteer-driven organization that has become one of the largest athletic establishments in Victoria. With over 800 registered members, GLAC proudly holds the title of being the very first Little Athletics Club in Australia. The center comprises eight clubs, including Chilwell, East Geelong, Leopold, and others, offering athletics training and competition for athletes aged 5 to 16 years. The emphasis is on individual improvement, with a variety of running, jumping, and throwing events for athletes to participate in.
GLAC’s John Landy Athletics Field in South Geelong, VIC, serves as the hub for Track & Field competitions held on Saturday mornings from October to March, and Cross Country events taking place on Saturday afternoons from April to August at various Geelong locations. Athletes must be registered to compete, with registration costs varying depending on the chosen club. The center also offers an optional Cross Country Program during the winter months, providing a comprehensive athletics experience for participants of all ages and skill levels.
GLAC’s philosophy revolves around creating a fun and engaging environment for families to come together and enjoy athletics. The center’s 100% volunteer-driven approach highlights the importance of community involvement, with over 100 volunteers needed weekly to run the program smoothly. Parents and family members are encouraged to participate in various roles, from assisting with events to becoming officials, ensuring that all athletes have the support they need to excel in their sporting endeavors. GLAC welcomes new athletes to experience athletics firsthand through trial days before the official start of the season, fostering a sense of inclusivity and camaraderie within the Geelong athletic community.
