Detailed Information

Melbourne Kannada Sangha (MKS) was established in 1986 by a group of dedicated volunteers with a passion for promoting Kannada culture through various events and festivals. Over the years, MKS has evolved into a non-profit organization, playing a pivotal role in organizing cultural programs and celebrations such as Karnataka Rajyotsava, Dasara, and Ugadi. The Sangha has garnered support from esteemed sponsors like ANZ BANK and the Victorian Government, further solidifying its presence in the community.

With a focus on fostering a sense of community and cultural pride, MKS has expanded its offerings to include Kannada language classes, library services, and the publication of the popular monthly magazine “MELNUDI.” The establishment of Kannada Bhavana, the second of its kind outside of India, stands as a testament to MKS’s commitment to preserving and promoting Kannada heritage. Through the collective efforts of volunteers and patrons, MKS continues to thrive and serve as a beacon of Kannada culture in Australia.

As Melbourne’s Indian population continues to grow steadily, MKS is poised to play an even more significant role in the community, with a projected increase to 300,000 by 2031. The organization’s vision of creating a vibrant Kannada community in Australia is well on its way to realization, thanks to the unwavering support of its members, sponsors, and partners. MKS’s dedication to cultural enrichment and community engagement sets it apart as a cornerstone of Kannada heritage in Melbourne.
