The Illawarra Academy of Sport, established in 1985, is a pioneering not-for-profit sporting organization in the Australian regional Academy model. With a strong focus on developing talented young athletes, coaches, and administrators in the Illawarra region, the IAS has a rich history of producing top-tier athletes. Over the past three decades, the academy has nurtured 15 Olympians, 20 Commonwealth Games Representatives, 11 World Champions, and 75 Senior National Team Representatives, showcasing its commitment to excellence.

Offering over 300 scholarships annually across 10 different programs, the IAS provides a holistic approach to athlete development. Through programs in 11 sports disciplines, including basketball, cycling, and volleyball, the academy not only focuses on technical skill acquisition but also emphasizes personal and professional growth. With a curriculum covering areas such as Sports Nutrition, Performance Psychology, and Youth Leadership, the IAS aims to create well-rounded athletes who are not only successful on the field but also valuable members of the community.

Aligned with the Australian Institute of Sport’s Winning Edge Strategy and the FTEM model, the Illawarra Academy of Sport plays a crucial role in preparing young athletes for elite competition. Supported by government funding, corporate partnerships, and community contributions, the IAS is dedicated to equipping future champions both on and off the field. Through initiatives like the MCR Indigenous Sports Program, the academy ensures inclusivity and mentorship for Indigenous athletes, further enhancing its impact on the sporting landscape of the Illawarra region.
