Friendly Forest & Sensory Trail is Australia’s first dementia-friendly forest and sensory trail located in Ballarat. Designed to evoke positive memories and sensations for people living with dementia, the $440,000 trail meanders through native bushland on Wadawurrung Country. Initiated by local advocate Anne Tudor, the trail offers an inclusive experience in nature for individuals with dementia, their carers, and groups from aged care facilities.
Co-designed with input from people living with dementia, carers, community health groups, and organizations like Parks Victoria and Dementia Australia, the trail provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature. Accessible for wheelchairs, assistance dogs, and carers, the trail features various stopping places for visitors to engage with nature in different ways. Supported by funding from Parks Victoria, CDC Victoria, CMV Truck & Bus, and Volvo Bus Australia, the trail aims to create a welcoming and enriching environment for all.
With a focus on promoting dementia-friendly communities and enhancing the well-being of individuals living with dementia, Friendly Forest & Sensory Trail offers a meaningful and engaging experience for visitors. Situated within Woowookarung Regional Park, the trail not only supports the recovery of native bushland but also encourages a deeper connection with nature. Through partnerships and community involvement, the trail exemplifies a commitment to inclusivity, accessibility, and the preservation of natural landscapes for future generations to enjoy.
