Detailed Information

DownsSteam Tourist Railway & Museum is a volunteer-run community organization dedicated to preserving and restoring the rich railway heritage of the Darling Downs region. Established in 2001, DownsSteam focuses on the restoration of the last remaining steam locomotive built at the historic Toowoomba Foundry Company, C16-106 Southern Cross Works No. 28. The organization’s goal is to operate regular passenger services that will form part of an integrated tourism transport trail across the Darling Downs, offering fine food excursions to Warwick and Stanthorpe, as well as shorter trips to Nobby and Pittsworth to celebrate the region’s heritage.

With a large rolling stock fleet that includes steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, railcars, and coaches, DownsSteam has created an active railway precinct on the former Drayton sidings. One of their notable projects is the Dreamtime Journey Coach, a unique art installation that pays tribute to the indigenous people’s contribution to building the range railway. The organization’s commitment to honoring the region’s railway history and engaging the community in railway preservation efforts has made DownsSteam a significant tourist attraction and a venue for various events and experiences.

DownsSteam welcomes individuals interested in joining their friendly volunteer team to contribute their skills and expertise towards creating a special tourist attraction for the community. The organization’s annual events, such as Australia Day celebrations, Mother’s Day/Father’s Day breakfast, and Carnival of Flowers Week, provide opportunities for visitors to engage with the railway heritage of the Darling Downs region and enjoy the unique experiences offered by DownsSteam Tourist Railway & Museum.
