Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre, part of Museums Victoria, is a place that honors and celebrates the vibrant cultures of the First Peoples of Victoria and Australia. Through performances, storytelling, artwork, and exhibitions, Bunjilaka tells the story of survival against the odds. The center was established in 2013 with a focus on presenting the Koorie experience with depth and respect, showcasing contemporary Koorie art and cultural exhibitions.
At Bunjilaka, visitors can immerse themselves in the rich history and traditional beliefs of the First Peoples, from the time of Creation to the present day. The center’s Birrarung Gallery features exhibitions by Aboriginal artists, while the Kalaya performance space hosts cultural events. The Milarri Garden, planted with native flora significant to the Aboriginal people of south-eastern Australia, provides a tranquil setting for reflection and connection to the land.
Committed to placing First Peoples’ living cultures and histories at the core of its practice, Bunjilaka collaborates with Aboriginal communities to ensure authenticity and cultural integrity. The name “Bunjilaka,” meaning “the place of Bunjil,” reflects the center’s dedication to ongoing creation and storytelling. By engaging with visitors through educational programs, exhibitions, and events, Bunjilaka fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and histories.
