Bendigo District RSL, located in Bendigo, Victoria, is home to the Bendigo Military Museum (BMM), a living Memorial honoring the service and sacrifice of Central Victorians in war and peacekeeping operations. The BMM is not just a museum but a place for people to connect, learn, and reflect together, showcasing a world-class collection of artifacts that tell poignant stories of local heroes. The Soldiers Memorial Institute, housing the BMM, is a historically significant building listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, commemorating thousands of men and women who served during the Great War.
Following a $5.1 million modernization project, the BMM reopened in 2018 as one of the largest Memorial Museums in the country. Visitors can explore permanent exhibits on local heroes from WW1 and WW2, as well as rotating temporary exhibitions. The Museum also features a RSL History Room and a Billiards Room slated for future redevelopment to highlight the stories of younger Veterans. The Museum’s gift shop offers a variety of merchandise, with proceeds supporting the preservation and promotion of local history.
The iconic dome of the BMM, originally a band rotunda, now offers a unique venue for private bookings and exclusive events, providing a stunning view of Bendigo’s skyline. Additionally, the Soldiers Memorial Institute has launched a new website and is part of the Victorian Collections digital archive, contributing to the remembrance of those who died in WW1. With a mission to educate, inspire, and honor the sacrifices of those who have served, Bendigo District RSL and the BMM stand as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the local community.
