Australian Queer Archives (AQuA) is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization based in Melbourne, Australia, dedicated to collecting, preserving, and celebrating the rich and diverse histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex, queer, Brotherboy and Sistergirl (LGBTIQ+) Australians. Established in 1978, AQuA boasts the pre-eminent research collection for LGBTIQ+ histories in Australia, making it a vital resource for researchers, cultural institutions, and anyone interested in learning more about the LGBTIQ+ communities.
With the world’s largest and most significant archives of historical Australian LGBTIQ+ material, as well as Australia’s largest international LGBTIQ+ collection, AQuA is committed to ensuring that the stories and experiences of LGBTIQ+ individuals, their lovers, friends, and communities are preserved for future generations. By acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land where their collection is kept, AQuA pays respect to the Yaluk-ut Weelam Clan of the Boon Wurrung and all First Nations people across the land, embodying a philosophy of inclusivity and cultural awareness.
