ABADA-Capoeira | South Melbourne Kids & Adults is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to spreading and supporting Brazilian culture through the practice of Capoeira. Led by Mestre Camisa, the Founding President based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the academy focuses on empowering individuals within a group setting. Their philosophy revolves around the idea that Capoeira is a tool for self-knowledge and development, promoting equality and common goals among participants. This Afro-Brazilian art form is seen as a symbol of resistance and resilience against injustice.
The academy offers classes for both kids and adults, welcoming beginners to join trial classes to explore the movements, history, and music that define Capoeira. With a new location in Carlton North, ABADA-Capoeira aims to provide an enhanced experience for students, emphasizing a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Through workshops, school incursions, and other activities, the academy strives to engage the community and share the rich cultural heritage of Capoeira.
As ABADA-Capoeira transitions to its own academy space, it continues to uphold its commitment to honoring the Traditional Custodians of the lands where its classes are held. The academy pays respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as the Ancestors and Elders of the First Nation’s peoples of Brazil and the enslaved Africans who contributed to the legacy of Capoeira. With a focus on growth, learning, and cultural exchange, ABADA-Capoeira invites individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery and connection through this dynamic art form.
