Detailed Information

Woowookarung Regional Park, meaning ‘place of plenty,’ is a 641-hectare park in Ballarat, established in 2016 for the enjoyment of the people. This park offers a range of outdoor activities such as bushwalking, trail running, and cycling amidst the beautiful Messmate Stringybark, Grass Trees, and native heath. Visitors can explore scenic lookouts with their dogs on lead, ride horses through the former state forest, and keep an eye out for kangaroos, echidnas, various bird species, and colorful wildflowers.

In 2021, Woowookarung Regional Park introduced Australia’s first Dementia-friendly Forest and Sensory Trail, providing an accessible and tranquil 1km trail for individuals living with dementia. The park’s strategic directions plan focuses on creating a primary track network, track connections, and specialty circuits for different user groups while maintaining a balance between environmental conservation and sustainable recreation. Collaborating with Parks Victoria and other partners, the park aims to enhance visitor facilities and nature-based experiences for all to enjoy.

With a rich history rooted in the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung Aboriginal people, Woowookarung Regional Park continues to evolve with community input and support. As part of Victoria’s network of parks and reserves, the park acknowledges the ongoing connection of Traditional Owners to the land and their role in caring for Country. Visitors can engage with over 400 Licensed Tour Operators across Victoria to enhance their nature-based adventures, from hiking and birdwatching to indigenous culture tours, ensuring a safe and memorable experience in this diverse and vibrant natural setting.
