Detailed Information

UniSQ Japanese Garden QLD, also known as Ju Raku En, is a serene oasis located on the northern side of UniSQ Toowoomba. Established in 1989, this three-hectare garden is a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese design and Australian landscape. The Garden, jointly owned by UniSQ and the community, offers a tranquil escape for visitors seeking peace and longevity in a public setting.

With its meticulously placed rocks, lush greenery, and picturesque water features, Ju Raku En is one of Australia’s largest and most authentically designed Japanese stroll gardens. Designed by Professor Kinsaku Nakane of Kyoto, the garden reflects the principles of a Buddhist paradise, with symbolic bridges leading to islands where immortals are said to dwell. The careful planning and construction of the garden since 1983 showcase a commitment to creating a space that evolves over time, embodying the essence of nature and tranquility.

Aside from being a popular venue for weddings, Ju Raku En serves as a cultural and educational hub, inviting visitors to experience the beauty and serenity of a traditional Japanese garden. As a member of the Regional Universities Network, UniSQ Japanese Garden QLD embodies a deep respect for the land and its heritage, acknowledging the First Nations of southern Queensland and their ongoing connection to Country. Through its timeless design and commitment to sustainability, Ju Raku En stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese landscaping traditions.
