Detailed Information

Ideally located just a short stroll from Toowoomba’s CBD, The Irish is more an entertainment venue than just a pub. We invite you to come in and try a cold Guinness, you’ll automatically become an honorary Irishman or woman for the day! The Irish Club Hotel is built on the site of Toowoomba’s very first hospital which opened in 1859, before closing its doors in 1865. Many say ghosts still roam the bars and hallways of the hotel – but we have always found them to be friendly!

In 1872, James Woods (licensee of the nearby Ipswich Hotel) commissioned architect Hugh Swann to supervise the erection of a two-storied brick shop and dwelling, which became the Governor Blackall Hotel. Half a century later in 1935, the business changed hands and its name, becoming the popular Hotel Canberra. It was purchased a year later in 2001, by Cameron and Janita Mayes, who built on the pub’s proud Irish identity. Today it’s operated by their son, Adam Mayes who has kept the traditional Irish themes, while adding some exciting promotions and events.

The Irish has since become one of Toowoomba’s favourite pubs and has earned a reputation for its warm hospitality, fantastic facilities, great value meals & drinks, and very popular live entertainment. The Irish Club Hotel is committed to supporting our local community. We hire locals and buy from local suppliers whenever possible. We also support and sponsor local charities and sports clubs, including the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, The Metropolitan East Cricket Club, also known as The Trojans.
