Detailed Information

Steamrail Ballaarat, also known as Ballarat East Locomotive Depot, is a non-profit organisation under Steamrail Victoria dedicated to the restoration and operation of vintage steam, diesel, and electric locomotives and carriages. With over 50 years of experience, Steamrail Victoria continues to offer regular excursions to various destinations throughout the state, catering to groups and organisations seeking a unique and memorable day out. The Vintage Train©, part of the Steamrail fleet, traverses the Victorian railway network, providing a range of tours to suit different preferences, including weekend trips to popular and intriguing locations.

The Steamrail carriage fleet boasts around thirty cars, featuring sitting, sleeping, and specialist vehicles dating back to the early 20th century. These meticulously maintained vehicles offer comfortable seating, varnished wood panelling, and opening windows for an authentic and enjoyable travel experience. Each train includes a kiosk car and most have a licensed bar, ensuring passengers can relax and indulge while taking in the scenic views of Victoria’s railway landscape. The Newport Railway Workshops, the historic birthplace of many locomotives and carriages, serve as the hub for maintaining and restoring Steamrail’s fleet, showcasing the organisation’s commitment to preserving railway heritage.

Established in 1965 as the “Steam Preservation Co-ordination Committee,” Steamrail Victoria has evolved into a prominent player in the preservation and operation of historic locomotives and carriages. The organisation’s focus extends beyond servicing and maintaining locomotives to include the upkeep of essential facilities like turntables and water columns, as well as the acquisition and restoration of rolling stock. By becoming a registered non-profit entity in 1980, Steamrail solidified its dedication to preserving railway history, with notable achievements such as the restoration of locomotive K190 and the establishment of workshop facilities at the Newport Railway Workshops. Steamrail welcomes new members and volunteers to contribute to its mission of keeping Victoria’s railway heritage alive and thriving.
