Detailed Information

The National Rock Garden celebrates Australia’s rich geological heritage through a diverse display of rocks and minerals that have shaped the nation’s landscapes, culture, and prosperity. With over one hundred large rocks sourced from across the continent, each specimen tells a unique story and provides insight into the evolution of Australia over the last four billion years. The garden aims to educate and inspire visitors about the significance of rocks, including fossils and ore samples, to both the land and indigenous communities.

Founded by Geological Society of Australia members Doug and Caryl Finlayson in 2008, the idea of a National Rock Garden was born out of admiration for Finland’s geological displays and a desire to showcase Australia’s geological wonders. The garden’s establishment in Canberra, alongside other national landmarks, signifies its importance in preserving and sharing the geological history of the country. Through interactive displays and educational resources, the National Rock Garden offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore and appreciate Australia’s geological diversity.

Located within the National Arboretum Canberra, the National Rock Garden continues to evolve and expand its collection of iconic rocks from around Australia. By acknowledging and respecting the Traditional Custodians of the land, the garden emphasizes the ongoing connection between the Australian people, the land, and its geological heritage. Through ongoing initiatives and partnerships, the National Rock Garden remains committed to promoting geological education and conservation for present and future generations.
